According to many drivers, the greatest tracks are those converted from existing roads, where the course wasn’t decided by a computer but by the lay of the land and the paths traced by man and his many activities. Spa Francorchamps is exactly that.
This is the reason for its unquestionable charm and its immense history that began exactly one hundred years ago simply by connecting three state roads. Seven kilometres long – but it was 14 for a long time – with climbs and descents that take your breath away – who does not know Eau Rouge and Raidillon? – it is recognized as one of the world’s best tracks by true champions.
In fact, in addition to being difficult, it has always been very fast, and only recently has it adopted escape routes and safety precautions that have greatly reduced the risks. But it isn’t just a hard circuit to learn in real life, it also takes quite a lot of effort to learn the “tricks” and choose the right gear and braking points with the simulator, especially right before the chicane and the curve just after the pits, where the inexperienced tend to lock the wheels of classic cars not equipped with any driver assistance technologies.
The circuit, located in in the hilly Ardennes Forest section of Belgium, it has the additional complication of frequently changing weather. In addition to Formula 1 – it’s also great to tackle it on the simulator behind the wheel of the Lotus 25 and, when you’re ready – and strong – the Maserati 250F. Spa is famous for its 24-Hour races and the eClassic cars are perfect way to experience an emotion that only great drivers know.
